Tools used for Product Research :

Below are programs I have personally used for years and would recommend to anyone doing product research. You only need one from each section, no need for all the bells and whistles, especially not at the start.

Disclaimer: Some of the links below to Jungle Scout, Helium 10, and Viral Launch are affiliate links (and come with exclusive discounts). That being said, I use all these tools regularly and in my Report, and would never recommend them if I didn't!

FAVORITE CHROME EXTENSIONS

Jungle Scout - Chrome Extension

The oldest software estimating monthly sales and revenues of listings on Amazon and considered one of the best. They also have a product database, keyword search, and much more. I might be biased because Jungle Scout was my first (Amazon-related software, that is!), but it is my favorite Extension to use.

TRY IT

Helium 10 - Chrome Extension

Another leading software for product research and validation which also includes a number of great tools for keyword research, listing optimization, analytics, marketing and more. For product research, you'd want to use Xray Chrome Extension and keyword tools, and while the rest of their tools are great, you might want to wait to purchase more premium plans until you start selling well, as they can be pricey.

FAVORITE KEYWORD SEARCH TOOLS

JungleScout - Keyword Scout

Jungle Scout's Keyword Scout tool shows estimated search volumes, PPC costs and more and is easy to use.

Helium 10 - Magnet and Cerebro

Instead of Jungle Scout's Keyword Scout you can use Helium 10's Keyword tools for keyword research.

MerchantWords

I use MerchantWords in addition to either Jungle Scout's or Helium 10's keyword tools, just for some extra comparison (as each program has slightly different estimates), but you'd only really need to use one of these. MerchantWords gets pricey if you want to use it for different countries Amazon is in.

SALES HISTORY CHARTS

AMZScout - PRO Extension

AMZscout is similar to Jungle Scout and Helium 10. Still, while I prefer to use the Chrome Extensions of the latter two, AMZScout has a handy sales history chart in its Extension with which we can make sure that the niche isn't seasonal, trending, or dropping in demand. There is more to it than just a quick look, of course, and more info on reading this chart is described in the Report.

Viral Launch - Market Intelligence

Just like AMZScout, the Chrome Extension of Viral Launch also has a graph showing sales volume history (as well as review volume and sales price changes). I check both the charts on AMZScout and Viral Launch to better understand the niche history, as each program works on slightly different algorithms, and often the two are pretty different (nothing wrong with that, just gotta understand why and how to read them, which requires in-depth knowledge in the market and experience in product research - how to read them is explained in the Report).

PRODUCT DATABASE SOFTWARE

ZonBase - ZonResearch and Hot Products

When feeling like you've gone through every product possible, ZonResearch and Hot Products can be great options to uncover new items to then further analyze with Chrome Extensions. Don't just use the software and think the recommended products are great, though. Make sure you check their numbers in-depth with other tools!

Jungle Scout - Product Database and Opportunity Finder

Jungle Scout's Product Database and Opportunity Finder are another 2 great tools for when you run out of product ideas to check with Chrome Extensions (it's the one I use most). You can set parameters such as revenues, selling prices, sales volumes, review numbers, department, etc., and get a list of the Amazon listing that corresponds to those parameters. It's just those individual listings, though, not all of the listings of that product, so make sure to run Chrome Extension on the most appropriate keyword to see how the rest are doing!

Helium 10 - Black Box

Helium's Black Box works similarly. Most leading tools have this option, and you only "need one" of these. Instead of these product databases, you can sift through Amazon yourself and check products that you come across with Chrome Extensions. If you're starting out with product research, you can definitely hold off on these and go only for one of the Chrome Extensions and keyword tools.

PROFIT CALCULATORS

Helium 10 - Profitability Calculator

Helium's profitability calculator can be found within the Xray extension. It is a crucial tool for product validation to check your expenses and profit potential. It can be used for both FBA and FBM. It's the one I use.

Jungle Scout - FBA Calculator

Jungle Scout has a slightly different calculator in that it doesn't give you a quick estimate on profitability but is a spreadsheet with more detailed expenses you'll encounter (such as cost of samples, design, etc.). It's excellent for first-time Amazon sellers to get a better grasp of overall expenses. You can use it in conjunction with my Budget Calculator.

Fulfillment by Amazon Revenue Calculator

The official calculator released by Amazon works the same way as Helium 10's profitability calculator but is a bit "clunkier." It is free to use, though, and therefore great for those who are just interested in selling on Amazon (to keep costs down).

PRODUCT SOURCING

Alibaba

Alibaba is where most Amazon sellers get their products from. It is where you'll most likely be sourcing from as well. During product research, you'd want to check the average manufacturing costs of found products on Alibaba to be then able to check their profitability with profit calculators. Many listings also show estimated shipping costs, but you'd want to double-check those on other sites as well.

1688.com

When you're at the sourcing stage, you should check on Alibaba's Chinese website for differences in quoted manufacturing prices as it can help you during your negotiations. But when checking product profitability, best stick to Alibaba's quotes as new sellers don't have much negotiating power, and you'd always want to estimate higher rather than lower expenditure.

Supplyia.com

Supplyia is a global B2B supply chain management platform that helps businesses improve efficiency and reliability across their supply chains. Supplyia has a team of experienced sourcing agents who have a deep understanding of the Chinese manufacturing industry. They can help you find the right suppliers for your products, negotiate the best prices, and ensure that your products are made to your specifications.

SHIPPING COST ESTIMATES

Freightos

Freightos is an excellent site to get instant quotes from many different freight forwarders in minutes. You need to log in, but it is free to use. I'd recommend using it to calculate estimated shipping costs and not only looking at manufacturers' estimates on Alibaba.
